Beijing’s Espionage Operations Flourished Under Biden’s Watch
China’s efforts to infiltrate U.S. institutions have escalated at an alarming rate in recent years, with a new congressional report exposing more than 60 espionage cases tied to the Chinese Communist Party during the Biden administration. The findings [reveal] a systematic effort by Beijing to steal trade secrets, disrupt infrastructure, and silence critics operating within the U.S.
According to the FBI, China [accounts] for roughly 80% of all economic espionage prosecutions, and Beijing had direct connections to 60% of trade secret theft cases. Cyberattacks, corporate espionage, and transnational repression efforts have all been [linked] to the CCP’s influence in America.

One of the most public intelligence breaches [occurred] in 2023, when a Chinese spy balloon [floated] across the country before being shot down over the Atlantic. The surveillance equipment reportedly [contained] components from U.S. companies, raising concerns over how Beijing has gained access to sensitive technology.
Despite these threats, Biden pardoned two convicted Chinese spies last year as part of a deal that saw three Americans released from Chinese prisons. Yanjun Xu, a high-ranking Chinese intelligence officer, was [serving] a 20-year sentence for attempting to steal aerospace technology, while Ji Chaoqun was [sentenced] to eight years for working with Beijing’s Ministry of State Security. The prisoner swap also [included] a Chinese national convicted of possessing tens of thousands of child pornography images.

While Congress [sounds] the alarm on these security breaches, the Chinese government has [expanded] its influence through strategic land purchases and cyber intrusions. A sophisticated Chinese intelligence group, Salt Typhoon, was able to [penetrate] at least nine U.S. telecommunications companies, and a CCP-linked hacking operation [breached] the Treasury Department in 2024.
Adding to security concerns, federal agents [arrested] a Chinese national in California for illegally flying a drone over a U.S. military base. Another individual, Chen Jinping, [pleaded] guilty to operating a secret overseas police station for the CCP in New York City.
