Conservative Backlash Against Olympic Opening Ceremony’s Controversial Elements

It included an obese woman depicted as Jesus, surrounded by drag queens portraying the Apostles, and other provocative elements. Anne Descamps, a spokesperson for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, responded to the backlash by apologizing for any offense caused. “If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry,” Descamps said, emphasizing that the ceremony aimed to celebrate “community tolerance.” Despite the apology, the performance has continued to stir debate about artistic expression and respect for religious sentiments.
