The Fatal Climb
Alex Chiu, a 41-year-old mountaineer originally from Seattle and residing in Brooklyn since 2023, tragically fell approximately 3,000 feet while ascending Denali’s West Buttress route on June 2. The incident occurred at a location known as Squirrel Point, around 12,000 feet above sea level. Chiu was unroped at the time of the fall, which was witnessed by his two climbing partners. They attempted to locate him but were unsuccessful and descended to Camp 1 to seek help.
Due to high winds and snow, rescue teams were unable to access the accident site immediately. It wasn’t until June 4 that conditions allowed mountaineering rangers to recover Chiu’s body, which was then transferred to the state medical examiner.

A Life of Adventure and Mentorship
Chiu was not only an experienced climber but also an aerospace engineer working for the Federal Aviation Administration. He had previously worked as a software engineer at Boeing. His passion for mountaineering was well-known; he was a member of the Boeing Employees Alpine Society and had introduced many to the sport.
In a May 19 Instagram post, Chiu reflected on his decision to return to climbing after a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed a desire to reconnect with his adventurous self, writing, “I don’t want to know what happens to a dream deferred,” as reported in Fox News coverage.
Denali’s Perils
Denali, standing at 20,310 feet, is known for its challenging conditions, including extreme cold, high winds, and the risk of altitude sickness. Despite its popularity, the mountain has claimed numerous lives over the years. The West Buttress route, while commonly used, has seen multiple fatal accidents, including a similar unroped fall in 2010 where the climber’s body was never recovered.
At the time of Chiu’s accident, approximately 500 climbers were on Denali, as the peak climbing season runs from early May to July.
Chiu’s death serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks of high-altitude mountaineering, even for the most experienced climbers.
