Denver Schools Struggling With ‘Unprecedented’ Migrant Surge

Denver’s public school system faces an overwhelming burden that no district should have to endure, and it’s thanks to the city’s misguided “sanctuary” status. Classrooms are taking in a staggering 250 new students per week since the new year — an unimaginable number.

Superintendent Alex Marrero described the scenario as an “unprecedented challenge.” His message to the local community posted on the system’s website reported the deluge of migrants will cost the district another $837,000 to fund the needs of the new arrivals.

The numbers accompanied by a timeline of the influx tell the tale.

From last July 1 through New Year’s Day, Denver Public Schools absorbed an astounding 3,221 students new to the U.S. Since Oct. 1, there have been 1,300 new faces in classrooms.

And the pace has increased since the new year. A report from the school board last week confirmed that approximately 200-250 new migrant students are arriving every week

Most of them speak little or no English. This led to administrators rushing to hire more staff, and particularly bilingual educators to deal with the crush of non-native speakers.

Teacher Priscilla Rahn told “Fox & Friends” on Monday that her school was already at 100 students over the projected total, with more arriving weekly. “We’re already past the October count. So every new student we get, we don’t have the funds to provide them with resources.”

Incredibly, Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston blamed Republicans in general and former President Donald Trump specifically for the crisis.

This despite the fact that the nation has endured more than three years under Biden that saw a record number of invaders crossing the border. It also ignored the fact that it’s the GOP calling for the southern border to be effectively closed to get a grip on the illegal migrant crisis.

But to Johnston, it’s the Republicans’ fault.

The Democrat charged “the choice by Republicans in Congress to purposefully kill a historic, bipartisan border deal this week will have a devastating impact on Denver.”

As will, of course, it’s liberal leadership who decided to proclaim themselves a “sanctuary” city.
