Durbin Blocks Bill To Detain Violent Illegal Migrants

In a stunning display of overtly putting the concerns of violent illegal migrants ahead of law-abiding U.S. citizens, Sen. Dick Durbin on Wednesday blockaded a bill that would immediately detail illegals charged with committing heinous crimes. 

Sen. Joni Ernst, a stalwart champion of “Sarah’s Law,” attempted to force a floor vote in the upper chamber. If successful, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would be permitted to detain illegal migrants accused of violent acts.

This would circumvent liberal prosecutors allowing them right back onto the streets to do even more damage.

Ernst asked for unanimous consent for the proposal, which would bypass debate and committee. After all, who would not support such a common-sense law to protect American citizens?

The Iowa senator told her colleagues that Sarah Root and Laken Riley would be alive if not for violent illegals being released who had already been held on prior offenses. But they were released, and two young women died as a result.

But unanimous consent may be derailed by one vote, and that vote came from Durbin.

This despite the clear and irrefutable intent of the proposal. As reiterated by Ernst, “It would merely require ICE to detain, just to detain, otherwise deportable illegal immigrants charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.”

Exactly where does opposition to such a proposal originate?

According to Durbin, the bill would result in detaining those charged with crimes. He claimed it would “deprive immigrants of the due process that everyone is afforded.”

He failed to add “illegal” to his statement. Their mere presence in the country is a violation of the law. But that matters not to Democrats who seek to build their voter rolls and ensure a leftist majority for the future.

Sarah’s Law is named after Sarah Root, a 21-year-old Iowa woman who was killed in 2016 by a drunk driver in the country illegally. The suspect was allowed to post bond and ultimately escaped justice.

Laken Riley was recently bludgeoned to death while out for a jog on the University of Georgia campus. The suspect is an illegal migrant who was previously arrested and now faces numerous charges, including malice murder.

Ernst said simply and convincingly, “the reality is Laken’s heartbreaking story did not have to happen.”
