Fani Willis Campaign Funds Funneled In From Outside Georgia

Embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is relying almost exclusively on out-of-state donors to fuel her election campaign. She enjoyed only a minuscule local boost in her controversial prosecution of former President Donald Trump and multiple co-defendants.

In fact, according to election data nearly 70% of the money Willis took in for reelection came from outside of Georgia. From May 2022 through Jan. 2024, she received $326,042 from a staggering 46 states.

These donations from far beyond her local area were revealed by the Georgia Campaign Finance Commission.

This begs the obvious question of why an obscure local official drew financial support from across the U.S.

Willis faces two challengers for her position. Democrat Christian Wise Smith and Republican Courtney Kramer are running to unseat her as Fulton County district attorney. There should be many voters who would like to see a different individual in her position.

Newsweek reported that the Willis campaign does not appear to have benefited locally from Trump’s prosecution. But the controversy that swirled around her actions before and during the case may have taken their toll on her support, though the extent remains to be seen.

She was barely permitted to stay on the case, and that hinged on lead prosecutor Nathan Wade stepping down. One of Trump’s co-defendants revealed that the two had an inappropriate relationship that predated his hiring by the DA’s office.

Wade resigned just hours after the judge issued his ruling that one or both had to step aside.

Trump’s attorneys appealed the ruling that the relationship did not affect the case. They asked the Georgia Appeals Court to review the tangled situation and possibly remove Willis from the proceedings.

Republican lawmakers in Georgia have also launched an investigation into alleged misdeeds connecting to the prosecution.

Despite drawing opposition, Willis undoubtedly has the inside track in solidly Democratic Fulton County. The winner of the primary will almost certainly be victorious in the general election.

Willis said she welcomed the challenge but that her opponents should expect a “fight.” She added that “they should know that my heart is still in this work. My heart will continue to be in this work and I intend to be the DA for the next four years and nine months.”
