Father Arrested After Fireworks Given To Son Spark Fires In Long Island
A Long Island man was arrested by an arson bomb squad after giving his 11-year-old son a firework that led to a fire damaging two homes in Levittown, New York. The Nassau County Police Department responded to the incident early on the 4th of July, revealing the dangerous consequences of mishandled fireworks.
According to authorities, Karamjit Singh, 33, handed his son a firework and instructed him to ignite it. The firework malfunctioned, launching into a nearby shed and setting it ablaze. The fire quickly spread to Singh’s home and a neighboring house, forcing a single mother renting part of the first home to flee for her life.
The Wantagh Fire Department responded swiftly, extinguishing the flames, but not before both homes sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported, but the incident led to Singh’s arrest by the Nassau County’s Arson Bomb Squad.
Singh faces several charges, including second-degree arson, fourth-degree reckless endangerment, selling fireworks to a minor, possessing fireworks illegally, and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was released without bail. Singh’s son was placed in the care of a family member.
The Nassau County Fire Marshals are investigating the fireworks accident to prevent similar incidents in the future. The event highlights the dangers of fireworks, particularly when used improperly or by minors.
This incident occurred amidst a series of fireworks-related accidents in the area. In Suffolk County, a 21-year-old man lost three fingers and sustained leg burns, and a 66-year-old Brentwood man lost a hand and several fingers in another accident.
The 4th of July holiday was marred by tragic fireworks accidents nationwide. In South Carolina, a man died after placing a lit firework on his head, and in Tennessee, a 35-year-old man succumbed to injuries from a firework explosion in his hands.
