FBI Must Focus On Real Threats Instead Of Political Enemies

Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, recently called for the FBI to increase its resources to combat domestic terrorism following a deadly attack in New Orleans. The attack, allegedly carried out by a radicalized individual with ties to ISIS, left 14 people dead, raising alarms about the growing threat of homegrown terror. Green pointed out that the FBI had once been more proactive in gathering human intelligence across the country, but has since scaled back its efforts.

Despite this call for increased FBI personnel to prevent future attacks, there is an underlying issue that needs attention: the Bureau’s diversion of resources away from national security and toward politically motivated investigations. One such example is the case of Dr. Eithan Haim, a Texas whistleblower who was harassed by the FBI after exposing a pediatric sex-change program. As the investigation into Haim continued, another terrorist plot was brewing in the same city—yet the FBI’s focus seemed to be on silencing political dissent rather than countering terrorism.

This imbalance in priorities was evident when it was revealed that, at the same time the FBI was investigating Haim, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a man from Houston, was allegedly planning his attack in New Orleans. Instead of focusing on a real national security threat, the FBI was spending valuable time investigating a whistleblower who had exposed a controversial medical practice.

The need for a focused and effective FBI is more urgent than ever. Green’s call for more agents to target radicalized individuals is valid, but the Bureau must first reassess how it prioritizes its work. With an increasing number of terrorist threats, it is essential that the FBI’s efforts shift away from partisan distractions and toward safeguarding national security.

Recent revelations about the FBI’s internal communications and its past actions show that the Bureau may still be facing pressure from political actors to focus on ideological opponents rather than real threats. The FBI’s decision to target political enemies instead of addressing actual terrorist plots like Jabbar’s should be a wake-up call for the agency.
