Former ICE Director Says We Must Return To Trump Border Policies

Former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director, Tom Homan, suggests that the best way to address the challenge of illegal immigration into the U.S. is to “go back to the Trump policies.” Concern over border security has soared this year in response to the Biden administration’s flagrant open arms policy.

With the recent surge in illegal border crossings, the question of how to effectively secure the southern border has once again come to the forefront. States like Texas have a vested interest in cutting down on illegal border crossings.

But the entire country should be up in arms over the reported 2 million undocumented immigrants who flooded the U.S. in 2023 — a figure that could be surpassed in 2024 if something doesn’t change.

Homan told Fox News the Biden administration “only cares about the optics” and that the choice to not reinstate border control is “by design.”

Other border officials have echoed similar concerns.

During his term, former President Donald Trump implemented a series of immigration policies aimed at strengthening border security. These policies can be broadly categorized into three main areas: Mandating E-Verify, completing the border wall and restricting immigration.

Homan argued that the implementation of Trump’s immigration policies yielded the most secure border in recent history — and he’s right.

E-Verify was a web-based tool that helped employers confirm potential employees were permitted to work in the states. By requiring employers to use it, the Trump administration sought to prevent illegal immigrants from being hired. Ultimately, that alone would deter them from wanting to cross the border into America.

The border wall would have prevented unlawful entry while also providing a barrier for law enforcement so they could have better control at the border. The Biden administration was eager to tear holes in that plan, and it has led to an uncontrollable insurgence along the southern border.

Trump’s policies also focused on implementing stricter regulations for future immigration, including the introduction of travel bans on individuals from certain countries deemed to pose a threat to national security, as well as the reduction of refugee admissions.

Homan told Dan Profit of the Counter Culture Podcast, “Look, what’s happening on the border right now is not a resource issue; it’s a policy issue.” He noted, “If they would simply go back to the Trump policies that gave us the most secure border in our lifetime, we’d be there.”

Homan added, “Mandate E-Verify, finish the wall, then we’ll talk about what you want to do as far as future immigration.”
