FTC Chairman Bans Staff From ABA Membership, Citing Political Bias

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson has issued a directive barring FTC political appointees from any involvement with the American Bar Association, citing its long-standing bias in favor of leftist policies. Under the new rule, FTC officials will no longer participate in ABA events, hold leadership positions, or use federal funds to support ABA memberships.

The decision follows a recent statement by the ABA condemning the Trump administration’s reforms, particularly its changes to USAID and diversity programs. Ferguson slammed the ABA’s claims as a political attack disguised as legal advocacy, pointing out the organization’s financial interest in maintaining USAID funding.

The ABA has received over $39 million in taxpayer-funded grants from USAID and the State Department over the past year. Ferguson argued that the organization’s criticism of Trump’s policies was driven by its financial dependence on government contracts rather than genuine legal concerns.

Sen. Mike Lee praised Ferguson’s move, calling the ABA a partisan institution that has long worked against conservative judicial nominees. He questioned why the Senate Judiciary Committee continues to rely on ABA evaluations when the organization has repeatedly given negative ratings to Republican-nominated judges.

Elon Musk also weighed in, stating that the ABA has become a “far-left political organization.” With growing conservative support for cutting ties with the ABA, more federal agencies may soon follow the FTC’s lead.
