Gabbard Warns Zelensky’s Actions Could Set Dangerous Precedent For US
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of consolidating power by banning opposition parties and seizing assets from political opponents. In a video statement, she warned that these actions should concern Americans — as they mirror tactics that could be used domestically to suppress political opposition.
Gabbard highlighted that Zelensky’s term ended on May 20, but instead of holding elections, he declared martial law and suspended Ukraine’s constitution to remain in power. She pointed out that this was not the first time he had moved against his rivals — noting that he had banned multiple opposition parties since 2022 and had taken direct control of Ukraine’s largest television networks.

She rejected arguments that Ukraine’s wartime situation justifies the suppression of elections — warning that such logic could easily be applied in the US. Since the US is also engaged in conflicts with Russia and China, she suggested that the same rationale could be used by political leaders and media figures to justify suspending the American Constitution and delaying elections.
Gabbard also drew a connection between Zelensky’s actions and what she described as an ongoing effort by US political elites to silence opposition. She pointed to the use of the Department of Justice to target President Donald Trump and other political figures — arguing that these measures are meant to preserve the power of those currently in control.
She cautioned that the growing acceptance of these tactics sets a dangerous precedent — urging Americans to recognize the broader implications of what is happening in Ukraine. She suggested that ignoring these warning signs could lead to similar abuses of power in the US.
