House Republicans Target Federal Judges Blocking Trump’s Policies

Several House Republicans are pushing to impeach federal judges who have issued rulings stalling key parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda. The effort follows legal battles over executive authority, with Trump allies arguing that certain judges have overstepped their constitutional role.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) has announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York. Engelmayer recently ruled to block the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing certain Treasury Department records, a decision that Trump’s allies argue limits executive authority.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is preparing impeachment charges against Rhode Island District Judge John McConnell Jr. who issued a ruling halting the administration’s freeze on federal spending. Clyde called McConnell a “partisan activist weaponizing our judicial system.”

The push for impeachment has gained traction among conservative lawmakers, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) also voicing support. Greene, who chairs a House subcommittee on government efficiency, said Congress must “hold judges accountable” when they attempt to interfere with executive decisions.

Vice President J.D. Vance has echoed concerns that some federal judges have inserted themselves into political battles, arguing that courts should not override the executive branch’s authority. Trump himself suggested at a recent Oval Office briefing that Congress should consider taking action against judges who are “violating” presidential powers.

Judicial impeachments are rare and require a two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict. The last successful impeachment of a federal judge occurred in 2010.
