Hunter Biden’s Lawyer May Face Punishment Over False Statements
A California federal judge has threatened to sanction Hunter Biden’s attorneys for allegedly lying in court documents in an attempt to dismiss his tax case. The defense claimed that Special Counsel David Weiss did not file charges against Biden until after his appointment as special counsel, similar to the dismissal of charges against former President Donald Trump. Judge Mark Scarsi criticized the defense for making false claims and noted that Weiss had brought charges as a U.S. Attorney before becoming a special counsel, differing from the Trump case where Jack Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland before bringing charges.
Judge Scarsi expressed frustration with the defense’s misrepresentation of facts, stating that “this court has little tolerance for lack of candor from counsel.” He has given Biden’s lawyers, Abbe Lowell and Bartholomew Dalton, a chance to respond satisfactorily or face monetary sanctions. The judge also allowed them to correct the motion papers containing the false statements.
The dispute centers around whether Weiss, initially approved by the Senate as U.S. Attorney, had the authority to bring charges against Biden in California. This controversy follows the dismissal of Trump’s Florida case, which was based on the argument that Smith’s appointment was illegal due to lack of congressional approval. Biden’s legal team is accused of trying to leverage this argument for their benefit.
Hunter Biden faces a September trial for evading taxes on $1.4 million owed to the IRS over three years. Additionally, he was convicted in June in Delaware for illegally owning a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine, potentially facing up to 25 years in prison.
