Illegal Immigrant Suspected In Shooting Of Jewish Man Near Chicago Synagogue

A Jewish man walking to a Chicago synagogue was allegedly shot by a man in the country illegally, according to reports. The suspect, identified by authorities as 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, is reportedly a Mauritanian national who entered the United States illegally in 2023, crossing through the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector before being released.

The shooting occurred in the West Rogers Park neighborhood early Saturday, where the 39-year-old victim was reportedly targeted by Abdallahi. After fleeing, the suspect returned to the area within 30 minutes and allegedly opened fire on bystanders, police, and paramedics. Video footage captured him shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the altercation.

Chicago police engaged with Abdallahi, who was injured during the exchange and transported to a hospital. Community leaders expressed outrage that he wasn’t charged with a hate crime, despite what appears to be an anti-Jewish motive. Fifty-ward Alderman Debra Silverstein noted that local politicians share this frustration, calling for prosecutors to consider the nature of the attack in full.

Abdallahi faces 14 felony charges, including multiple counts of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. ICE has stated they have had “no interaction” with Abdallahi thus far.

The case highlights broader concerns surrounding border security, with reports showing that more than 250 immigrants on the terror watch list were encountered under the Biden-Harris administration, some of whom have entered U.S. communities. This incident has sparked debate on the effectiveness of the current immigration system in vetting individuals who pose potential threats to public safety.
