Kamala Harris Faces Major Setback In Michigan As Internal Polls Show Trouble
In a leaked video, Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) admitted that Vice President Kamala Harris is “underwater” in her home state of Michigan. This revelation has caused alarm among Democrats, as Michigan is one of the key battleground states needed for Harris to secure a win in the 2024 election. Slotkin, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat, made the comments during a virtual fundraiser with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
Slotkin’s concerns are in stark contrast to public polling, which shows Harris leading former President Donald Trump by a narrow margin of 1.4% in the RealClearPolitics polling average. However, Slotkin’s internal polling suggests Harris is losing ground, a troubling sign for Democrats hoping to hold onto Michigan.
Michigan is considered part of the Democrats’ “blue wall,” along with Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. If Trump wins the Sun Belt and flips just one of these states, he could secure the presidency. Harris’ struggling performance in Michigan could open the door for Trump to pull off a major victory in the Midwest.
Polling experts like CNN’s Harry Enten have noted that Trump often underperforms in polls, meaning he could have even more support than current polling shows. If history repeats itself, this could put Harris in a dangerous position in Michigan and threaten Democratic control of the U.S. Senate, as well.
Slotkin’s admission has raised the stakes in Michigan, where both the presidential race and her Senate campaign against former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) are tightening. A Republican win in Michigan would all but guarantee a GOP Senate majority, making the state one of the most critical battlegrounds in the upcoming election.
