Mississippi Becomes Magnet For Growth After Eliminating Income Tax

Gov. Tate Reeves made history this week by signing legislation that removes Mississippi’s individual income tax, officially placing the state among a rare group that rewards work instead of punishing it. Supporters are hailing the move as a game-changing step toward long-term prosperity and personal freedom.

In his announcement, Reeves called the moment a turning point that will echo for generations. After years of fighting to let Mississippians keep more of what they earn, the governor said the state is now positioned to lead the South in jobs, investment and population growth.

Reeves said the policy shift wasn’t about making headlines — it was about setting a bold course for the future. With this law in place, Mississippi joins the small group of states that do not impose income taxes, sending a powerful signal to job creators across the country.

By removing the income tax, Mississippi is telling workers their labor won’t be penalized. It’s a message that says Mississippi values ambition, values hard work and is willing to compete with the best-performing states in America.

Reeves credited a team of conservative lawmakers who backed his effort. He thanked Speaker Jason White, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Ways and Means Chairman Trey Lamar, noting that their persistence helped deliver what he called a “generational victory.”

The legislation is expected to attract businesses and families from across the region. Reeves made it clear that Mississippi is not interested in half measures — this was about going all the way and leading by example.

With more money staying in people’s paychecks, local economies across Mississippi could benefit as spending and investment rise. Business leaders are already eyeing the state as a place to expand operations without being overburdened by taxes.
