North Korea Tests New Missile With Massive Warhead Amid Rising Tensions

North Korea announced on Tuesday that it has test-fired a new tactical ballistic missile, Hwasongpho-11Da-4.5, capable of carrying a “super-large” 4.5-ton warhead. This development is part of North Korea’s strategy to enhance its military capabilities in response to what it perceives as threats from the United States and its allies.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile was tested on Monday to evaluate its flight stability and accuracy over maximum and minimum ranges of 310 miles and 55 miles, respectively. South Korea’s military reported that North Korea launched two ballistic missiles, with the first traveling 370 miles and the second 75 miles. The shorter flight of the second missile suggested an abnormal launch, potentially resulting in debris scattering, though no damage was reported.

The KCNA did not specify the launch or landing sites but confirmed that both maximum and minimum range tests were conducted, indicating two separate missile launches. North Korea plans to conduct another test in July to further evaluate the missile’s performance at a medium range of 155 miles.

North Korea has significantly ramped up its weapons testing since 2022, aiming to develop a nuclear arsenal capable of striking the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. The recent missile test appears to be focused on South Korea, given the ranges involved. Experts suggest that North Korea aims to use its growing nuclear capabilities to strengthen its position in future diplomatic negotiations with the U.S.

The latest test follows North Korea’s statement of “offensive and overwhelming” responses to new U.S. military exercises with South Korea and Japan. Just five days prior, North Korea tested a multiwarhead missile, which it claimed was successful, although South Korea dismissed the test as a failure.

These missile tests underscore the escalating tensions in the region and North Korea’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military strength amid international scrutiny and diplomatic challenges.
