NYC Subway Murders Up 60%, Risking New Record

The number of murders on New York City’s subway system has risen by 60% this year, according to recent NYPD data. With eight people killed on the subway or at stations by early September, the city is approaching a 25-year record of 10 murders set in 2022.

Freddie Weston, 47, was the latest victim, shot on September 5, 2024, at the Rockaway Avenue station. His family has expressed frustration over the lack of security cameras at the station, arguing that proper surveillance could have prevented his death. Jakeba Dockery, whose husband was killed earlier this year, voiced concerns about the subway’s safety, stating, “It’s not a safe environment to be waiting for the train.”

Despite significant efforts to curb crime, including deploying 750 National Guardsmen and 1,000 additional NYPD officers, subway murders have continued to rise. The NYPD has reported a 15% decrease in overall subway felonies this year and has made substantial weapon seizures, including 43 firearms and 1,536 knives.

The NYPD attributes the reduction in other types of subway crime to increased patrols and investigations. However, the ongoing rise in murder rates highlights the persistent safety concerns for subway riders.

As New York City approaches a possible record for subway murders, there is increasing pressure on city officials to improve security and address the underlying issues contributing to the rise in violence.
