Professional Lifeguard Killed In Hawaiian Shark Attack: ‘Loved by All’

A professional lifeguard tragically lost his life following a shark attack while surfing near Oahu, Hawaii, on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred off the coast of Goat Island, prompting a swift response from local emergency services.

The attack was reported just before 1 p.m. by a witness who saw a man being attacked by a shark. Responders from Honolulu Ocean Safety, along with the fire, police, and emergency medical services departments, arrived at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore following the call.

Local lifeguards retrieved the victim from the water using a jet ski, and paramedics attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, the lifeguard, identified as Tamayo Perry, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene. Perry suffered multiple shark bites, according to Shayne Enright from the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

Following the fatal attack, Ocean Safety personnel posted warnings to caution swimmers and surfers in the vicinity. Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety described Perry as a beloved and renowned figure in the community.

“He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide,” Lager stated during a press conference.

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and to the entire lifeguard ohana. We’re asking for some privacy for his family at this time.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also expressed his sorrow over Perry’s death, calling it a “tragic loss.”

“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected, a great member of our Ocean Safety team,” Blangiardi remarked.

“The City and County of Honolulu stands with our Ocean Safety community and will provide all necessary support during this period of mourning. We ask the community to join us in honoring his memory and to keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

Perry had begun his career with the Ocean Safety Department in July 2016. The community mourns the loss of a respected and cherished lifeguard who dedicated his life to ensuring the safety of others.
