Sen. Bob Casey ‘Not Concerned’ About Secret Service Leadership After Attempt on Trump’s Life
In the wake of an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump and the calamitous oversights that contributed to the tragic shooting on that day, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) expressed confidence in the Secret Service’s capabilities. The incident occurred last Saturday when a 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing Trump’s ear and fatally wounding one supporter. Two others were injured, one critically.
Footage from the rally shows the chaos as shots rang out, with Secret Service agents returning fire and eventually standing Trump up, who then fist-pumped the crowd before being escorted off the stage.
Despite the severity of the incident, Senator Casey stated he was “not concerned” about the Secret Service’s leadership. When asked about the agency’s ability to protect candidates, he replied, “Well, I’m not concerned that they don’t have the expertise and the resources, and if they need more resources, then they should come to us.”
This response comes after revelations that the Secret Service identified Crooks as suspicious 10 minutes before Trump took the stage but did not secure a nearby roof, identified as a vulnerability days earlier. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle explained that agents did not man the roof because it was ‘sloped.’
Crooks reportedly used a drone to survey the fairgrounds shortly before the attack, raising further security concerns. Nearly a week after the incident, no detailed explanation from the Secret Service has been provided.
The lack of immediate and detailed responses has fueled criticism from conservative circles. Many speculate on how the situation would be handled if the roles were reversed, suggesting a Democrat president would likely trigger more significant outcry and calls for stricter security measures.
Previously, Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson proposed stripping Trump of Secret Service protection if he were imprisoned following what many conservatives see as politically motivated charges. This has intensified the belief among Trump supporters that there is a concerted effort against the former president.
Donald Trump Jr. recently discussed these sentiments, suggesting that radical leftists not only want Trump imprisoned but dead, echoing the fears of many of his father’s supporters.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Monday to address these security lapses and the agency’s overall preparedness.
