Sen. Menendez Seeks Independent Run Amid Bribery Charges And Dwindling Campaign Funds

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is reportedly circulating a petition to secure a spot on the November ballot as an independent candidate after the senator and his wife, Nadine, were charged with three federal counts of allegedly accepting bribes from New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana, Fred Daibes and Jose Uribe in September 2023.

The couple stands accused of using Menendez’s political influence to “protect and enrich” the businessmen while also benefiting the Arab Republic of Egypt, as stated in a New York Times indictment. Further allegations surfaced in January, claiming Menendez accepted bribes from the Qatari royal family, including luxury wristwatches, in exchange for speaking positively about Qatar.

Menendez, who declined to seek reelection as a Democrat, now faces the challenge of gathering at least 800 registered voter signatures before the June 4 deadline. The New Jersey Globe suggests this move could help him keep his seat or enhance his bargaining position in a potential three-way race.

Another hurdle for the senator is his dwindling campaign funds. Prior to his indictment, Menendez reportedly had over $8.5 million on hand. However, a recent Federal Election Commission filing shows his cash reserves have shrunk to just over $3.5 million.

As Menendez’s trial, which began on May 13, unfolds, jurors were given a virtual tour of his home through photographs taken during an FBI search in June 2022. The search uncovered $486,461 in cash and 13 gold bars worth more than $150,000. Menendez has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.
