Trump Administration Strips Media Control From White House Press Corps

The Trump administration is dismantling the long-standing control that the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has held over access to presidential events, marking a major shift in how political messaging reaches the American people. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Tuesday that her office will now determine which outlets get access to President Donald Trump in exclusive spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One.

For decades, the WHCA — a group dominated by legacy media with a left-leaning bias — has controlled which journalists are allowed to cover high-profile presidential moments. That era is now coming to an end. The administration’s decision follows a federal court ruling that rejected an Associated Press lawsuit seeking to block the White House from limiting its access.

Leavitt made it clear that the new policy is about breaking the media’s stranglehold over the flow of information from the administration to the public. “A select group of D.C.-based journalists should no longer have a monopoly over the privilege of press access at the White House,” she said.

The press secretary confirmed that the five major television networks will continue to rotate coverage of key moments, ensuring footage is available. However, new outlets — including streaming services — will now have the opportunity to be part of the White House press pool, allowing a broader range of perspectives to reach the public.

The Associated Press, which recently sparked controversy by refusing to use the White House-approved name “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico,” was recently denied access to Oval Office events and Air Force One. The administration stated that the AP is free to report as it wishes but does not have a guaranteed right to privileged spaces.

WHCA President Eugene Daniels attacked the decision, calling it an attempt by the administration to control which reporters cover the president. However, the White House insists that it is expanding press access to reflect the changing media landscape, ensuring that alternative voices are not shut out by entrenched corporate media interests.
