Trump Rallies Religious Voters In Speech Trashing ‘Radical Left’

Former President Donald Trump has faced criticism from some conservative Christians in the past over his rhetoric and positions on topics including abortion, but as he campaigns for a third straight GOP presidential nomination it appears that this influential voting bloc is largely behind him.

This week, he referenced his own faith as part of a broader call for voters of faith to unite around his campaign against the “radical left” and its campaign to weaken religious freedoms in the United States.

During a speech at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, the Republican front-runner introduced himself as a “fellow believer,” telling the audience that he is a “very proud Christian” who has stood up for religious values even when it earned him significant backlash.

“I am here today because I know to achieve victory in this fight, just like in the battles of the past, we still need the hand of our Lord and the grace of almighty God,” Trump said.

He went on to denounce the destruction of America’s traditions “by a radical left political class that has gone communist, Marxist and even fascist.”

Continuing his biting critique of his political foes, he said that the left’s animosity toward conservative Christians is rooted in the belief that “our allegiance is not to them, our allegiance is to our country and our allegiance is to our creator.”

Trump suggested that leftists fail to understand “that in the end, we do not answer to bureaucrats in Washington, we answer to God in heaven.”

Touting his accomplishments during his first term, Trump laid out a re-election platform that included repealing the Christian “persecution” he said had been implemented under the Biden administration.

“How any Christian can vote for a Democrat — Christian or person of faith — how you can vote for a Democrat, it is crazy,” he concluded. “Americans of faith are not a threat to our country. Americans of faith are the soul of our country.”

In 2020, a whopping 85% of White Evangelical Protestant voters cast a ballot for Trump, and among all voters who said they frequently attended religious services, the incumbent had a 59% to 40% advantage over Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
