Trump Revokes Security Clearance for Lawyers at Controversial Law Firm Perkins Coie

President Donald Trump has ordered the suspension of security clearances for lawyers at Perkins Coie LLP, the law firm that played a key role in funding the widely discredited Steele dossier. The executive order also restricts the firm’s access to classified information and limits the federal government’s ability to contract with Perkins Coie.

The move is part of Trump’s broader effort to revoke security clearances from individuals and entities he sees as national security risks. Last month, he stripped clearances from 51 former intelligence officials who dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, as well as former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley and former President Joe Biden.

Perkins Coie has been closely tied to Democratic efforts to undermine Trump. In 2016, while representing Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, the firm hired Fusion GPS, which in turn commissioned former British spy Christopher Steele to compile the now-debunked dossier. The document was used to justify Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against Trump campaign associate Carter Page.

The dossier’s role in the FBI’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election was later exposed as flawed. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe found no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, and a Department of Justice inspector general report criticized the FBI for relying heavily on Steele’s unverified claims in its surveillance efforts.

Trump’s executive order states that the firm’s “dishonest and dangerous activity” has compromised national security and election integrity. It also points to Perkins Coie’s history of working with leftist donor networks, including those backed by George Soros, to challenge election laws such as voter ID requirements.

Additionally, the order calls out the firm for racial discrimination, citing past hiring practices that allegedly imposed race-based quotas. Trump has directed federal agencies to review contracts with Perkins Coie and cut off funding where legally permissible.

Under the new policy, federal agencies must suspend any active security clearances held by Perkins Coie lawyers while reviewing whether maintaining such access aligns with national security interests. The order also places restrictions on hiring former Perkins Coie employees for government positions.

Trump’s crackdown on Perkins Coie follows the resignation of James Dennehy, the head of the FBI’s New York office, who was forced out earlier this week. Dennehy had vowed to resist Trump’s administration, but he was reportedly escorted out of the building as colleagues played bagpipes.
