Trump Urges GOP Unity, Backs Johnson Amid Greene’s Failed Ouster Attempt
Former President Donald Trump called for Republican unity and expressed support for House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, following Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s unsuccessful bid to remove him from his leadership position. In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Greene’s spirit and fighting spirit but emphasized the importance of the GOP presenting a united front against what he termed “the Radical Left Democrats.”
“With a Majority of One, shortly growing to three or four, we’re not in a position of voting on a Motion to Vacate,” Trump stated, referring to the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House of Representatives. He underscored the party’s strong performance in presidential polls, both nationally and in key swing states, and cautioned that any display of disunity could be portrayed as chaos, potentially undermining their efforts.

Trump described Johnson as “a good man who is trying very hard” while expressing regret that certain actions had not been taken over the past two months. However, he stressed the need for collaboration, saying, “we will get them done, together.”
Greene’s motion to vacate Johnson was overwhelmingly rejected in a 359-43 vote to table, effectively ending the challenge to his leadership. Among the 43 members who voted against tabling the motion, 11 were Republicans and 32 were Democrats, with seven members voting present.
The former president’s call for unity comes at a crucial time for the Republican Party as they navigate a narrow majority in the House and prepare for the upcoming 2024 elections. Trump’s endorsement of Johnson and his plea for discipline within the ranks underscore the importance of maintaining a cohesive front in the face of opposition from Democrats.
