Unusual Fog With Strong Odor Leaves Floridians Feeling Sick
A dense fog with an unusual chemical scent has settled over parts of Florida, sparking health complaints and raising concerns among residents. While the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued advisories for low visibility, locals say the fog has a strange smell and is making people sick.
Reports of coughing, sore throats, congestion, and lethargy have been widespread, with some individuals also experiencing nausea and stomach pain. A metallic taste in the air has been frequently mentioned, echoing similar reports from a fog event last month.
Many residents have taken to social media to question what might be causing the phenomenon. Some believe it is tied to industrial pollution becoming more noticeable in the humid air. Others fear something more sinister, comparing the situation to past government experiments, such as Operation Sea Spray, in which bacteria were dispersed in the air to study its effects.
A Naples resident posted photos of thick, gray fog covering a road, describing it as “chemical weapons, not fog.” Others have called on Florida officials to investigate, with some expressing frustration over the lack of official response.
Meteorologists have stated that fog is common in Florida this time of year and that certain weather conditions can make existing air pollutants more noticeable. However, residents continue to question why this particular event has caused so many people to experience discomfort.
The NWS has extended its fog advisory for parts of Florida’s coastline, warning that visibility may remain low until Wednesday morning. No additional guidance has been issued regarding the reported health effects.
