Usha Vance Set To Attend Dogsled Race In Greenland Amid Political Tensions

Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, is preparing to travel to Greenland to witness a traditional dogsled competition. According to Greenlandic news outlet Sermitsiaq, she is expected to attend the Avannaata Qimussersua race on March 29 during a privately organized visit.

While the U.S. has shown support for Greenland’s cultural events — including some financial aid for the race from the U.S. consulate in Nuuk — officials have emphasized that this trip is not part of any formal diplomatic mission. The timing, however, has sparked renewed scrutiny, as it comes just days before Greenland’s local elections scheduled for April 1.

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is reportedly joining Usha Vance for parts of the trip. The two are expected to stop in Nuuk, visit the dogsled race in Sisimiut and possibly make an appearance at the U.S. air base in northern Greenland, according to Danish news reports.

The mayor of Sisimiut confirmed that he declined a meeting request from the U.S. delegation, citing the ongoing local election campaign. He told Sermitsiaq he was open to discussions after the vote but did not want to engage before then.

Last week, President Donald Trump reignited debate over Greenland’s future during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Trump said he believed the U.S. acquiring the island “will happen,” citing international security as justification. He added that the Arctic is a key region given increased Russian and Chinese activity near its coastlines.

The visit follows a January trip by Donald Trump Jr. and Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk, which also drew media attention. That visit, like Usha Vance’s, was described as private but added to concerns among local leaders about U.S. influence during a sensitive political moment.
