Veteran DC Officer Killed By Accidental Discharge While Recovering Gun From Storm Drain

A veteran Washington, D.C., police officer was tragically killed on Wednesday when a firearm accidentally discharged as he attempted to retrieve it from a storm drain, the D.C. Police Union announced. Officer Wayne David, who had served the force for 25 years, was fatally shot in the head during the incident.

The tragic event occurred after officers witnessed a suspect leap from a suspicious vehicle and toss a firearm into a storm drain before escaping on a motorcycle. As officers worked to recover the weapon, it went off, striking David, according to the D.C. Police Union. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, David could not be saved.

The union expressed deep grief over the loss, stating, “Please send your prayers to his family and coworkers. We are all devastated at this incredible loss.”

Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll lauded David’s commitment to the community, calling him a “true hero” who sacrificed his life in the line of duty. “We will never forget that,” Carroll told reporters.

Law enforcement is currently conducting an investigation to find the suspect responsible for discarding the firearm. Authorities have released photos of a male suspect with long dreadlocks, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the risks officers face every day, stating, “While preliminary information indicates that the gunshot was the result of a tragic accident, this is a horrible reminder of the dangers our officers face every day. We are grateful for their service.”
