White House Defends Biden’s Sharpness, Highlights Harris As Party’s Future
In a press briefing on Wednesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities and pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s future. The comments come after Biden’s criticized performance at the recent CNN presidential debate.
Jean-Pierre addressed questions about Biden’s 2020 campaign remarks where he referred to himself as a “transition candidate” and a “bridge to the next generation of Democratic leaders.” She confirmed that Biden maintains this view, emphasizing that he chose Harris as his running mate because she represents the future of the party.
Jean-Pierre explained, “One of the reasons why he picked Vice President Kamala Harris is because she is indeed the future of the party. He’s very proud to have partnered with her and will continue to do so in delivering an unprecedented record for the American people.”
When asked if this transition would occur over eight years instead of four, Jean-Pierre declined to speculate, focusing instead on the strong partnership between Biden and Harris and their ongoing efforts to achieve their goals.
Regarding Biden’s mental acuity, Jean-Pierre assured the press that Biden remains “strong and resolute in delivering for the American people,” adding that he is “as sharp as ever.” She noted, “When I see him in the White House or Air Force One, I have to be on top of my game.”
These statements come amidst growing discussions among Democrats about Biden’s age and performance, with some looking toward Harris as a potential successor. Jean-Pierre’s remarks were intended to reaffirm confidence in Biden’s leadership and highlight Harris’s readiness to take on a more significant role in the future.
