Sen. Vance Takes Aim At US Foreign Aid, Says China Threat Should Be Our Focus

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) has argued that the United States should prioritize the threat posed by China over the ongoing war in Ukraine. In an interview with “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream Vance made the case that the U.S. is stretched too thin and cannot support multiple wars around the world.

Vance’s comments came in response to a Senate Armed Services Committee memo that highlighted the contributions of over 20 countries to Ukraine’s defense efforts against Russia. The senator explained that even if European countries increase their production by the end of 2024 and Russia does not significantly ramp up its own Russia will still maintain a significant advantage over Ukraine.

“The argument that I’m making is quite simple,” Vance said. “It’s not that we don’t admire the courageousness of the Ukrainians, we certainly do. It’s that America is stretched too thin.”

Vance criticized the elites who sent America’s manufacturing base to China and weakened the country’s ability to produce weapons arguing that they are now claiming that the U.S. can engage in three wars simultaneously. He questioned why Americans are subsidizing European security and emphasized that the focus should be on the country’s own problems particularly the threat posed by China.

When Bream argued that U.S. officials believe it is possible to manage multiple wars at once Vance pointed out that generals who admitted the country’s war policy was flawed in the past had their careers ruined. He questioned whether China would be more dissuaded by U.S. actions in Europe or by the country having the necessary weapons to prevent an invasion of Taiwan.

Vance concluded by stating that the Ukrainians have demonstrated Putin’s weakness and that if Europeans are willing to step up and take more responsibility for their own defense they can handle the Russian threat. He reiterated his call for the United States to focus on the threat posed by China.
