Ex-Cop Sentenced In Case Connected To NYC Mayor’s Campaign

On Tuesday, Dwyane Montgomery, a former New York City police officer, was sentenced to 200 hours of community service for his involvement in a scheme to bolster Mayor Eric Adams’ (D) successful 2021 campaign. Previously an NYPD deputy inspector, Montgomery was a central participant in a scheme to manipulate the city’s campaign finance system to favor Adams.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, led by Alvin Bragg, issued a statement describing Montgomery’s sentence, which included a one-year ban on his ability to host political fundraisers or solicit campaign contributions. Montgomery pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor conspiracy charge in February.

Montgomery’s operation hinged on the city’s matching funds system, designed to enhance the financial contributions of city residents by providing an 8-to-1 match for the first $250 donated. By orchestrating more than two dozen straw donations, Montgomery exploited this system, aiming to secure undue political influence within the Adams administration. This strategy involved organizing fundraisers and encouraging friends and relatives to participate in the scheme, thereby attempting to maximize the influx of donations to Adams’ campaign under the guise of legitimate support.

The indictment unveiled by Bragg’s office last July stops short of implicating Mayor Adams directly. Instead, it focuses on the orchestrated efforts of individuals like Montgomery, who sought to leverage political donations for future favors at City Hall. Despite the lack of direct accusations against Adams, the case casts a shadow over the mayor’s tenure, punctuated by his acknowledgment of a past acquaintance with Montgomery during their time in the NYPD.

The repercussions of this case extend beyond Montgomery’s sentencing, as Mayor Adams and his closest aides have come under increased scrutiny from law enforcement. Recent months have seen federal agents seizing Adams’ electronic devices and conducting raids on the homes of his top campaign aides, signaling a broader investigation into the mayor’s campaign financing practices, including allegations of conspiring to receive illegal contributions from foreign sources.

This series of events underscores a growing concern over the integrity of political campaign financing in New York City, raising questions about the adequacy of existing regulations and oversight mechanisms. With a spotlight now shining on the city’s matching funds system, critics and supporters alike ponder the implications for future political campaigns and the measures necessary to safeguard the democratic process from manipulation and misconduct.
